The best progressive lenses
Bernan Maintenaz, a young French engineer invented the best progressive lenses in 1959, called Varilux, nowadays property of Essilor. Right now Varilux X 4D are considered the best, we will talk about them later.
Glasses with progressive lenses are the best option for patients with presbyopia or eyestrain in short distances.
How do progressive glasses work?
When the user looks far away, the pupil goes to the upper part of the progressive lens, looking into the far vision zone. If we look in the medium zone of the lens, we will be in the medium vision zone. When we need a sharp vision in a short distance, we will use the lower side of the lens.
Now we will show you how these lenses are structured. This graphic also shows the “hallway”, we will talk about it later.
In Optical H we have great experience with progressive glasses; there are few cases in which the patient does not adapt to them.
How to know which are the best progressive lenses
There exist a lot of different progressive lenses, depending on the manufacturer. In fact, we can talk about treatments, reduction rate or the most important fact; its technology. Depending on the hallway’s measurement and the transition between the different vision zones, the adaptation will be easier.
Basic progressive lenses traditionally carved or new lenses digitally carved?
Basic progressive lenses follow a traditional fabrication method. Nevertheless, the new digital process allows a better visual quality. Also, this kind of lenses is super customizable since they are carved point by point in the inner and external part of the lens using the latest technology and digital equipment.
Generally, the visual quality will be better depending on the lenses customization and adaptation to the user.

There are different producers of these kind of lenses. They have different qualities depending of the technology used in the production. Some of them are Varilux (Essilor), Zeiss, Hoya, Indo or Rodenstock. Each of them separates its progressive lenses in ranges: High, medium and low.
